A Note to the Man Who Wants to Take Charge - Follow up to (Having the Conversation)

A Note to the Man Who Wants to Take Charge

Follow up to (Having the Conversation)

I want to add something here specifically for the men who are considering becoming the Head of Household (HOH) in a domestic discipline relationship.

Gentlemen, if your wife is asking you to take a stronger leadership role, she may be looking for more than a set of rules. She may be looking for a man whose leadership she can trust, whose decisions give her confidence, and whose strength allows her to feel secure enough to be vulnerable.

There is something attractive about a man who is comfortable taking responsibility. Masculinity, in this context, isn't about being loud, intimidating, or having to prove that you are in charge. It is about being grounded in who you are, willing to lead, and prepared to accept the responsibility that comes with that leadership.

In my view, there are four qualities that can make a tremendous difference in how a wife experiences her husband's leadership.

  1. Be Firm.

    1. Don't confuse kindness with being unwilling to hold a boundary. If you and your wife have mutually agreed on expectations and accountability, she may become frustrated if you continually back away from those agreements.

    2. Sometimes, being too soft can leave a wife feeling that the structure she asked for isn't really there. She may have asked you to help her remain accountable, only to discover that you are reluctant to follow through when the moment arrives. Plus that is what safe words are for. In case your firmness becomes a little too rough. And you should never show frustration if she uses it. It is a time to listen to each other.

    3. Firmness means taking your agreements seriously. It means being willing to have an uncomfortable conversation and follow through on reasonable, mutually agreed-upon consequences. It doesn't mean being harsh, angry, or inflexible when circumstances change.

  1. Be consistent.

    1. Consistency builds trust.

    2. If the same behavior matters on Monday but is ignored on Friday, your wife may begin to wonder whether your expectations mean anything. If you make promises about accountability but rarely follow through, the structure becomes unpredictable.

    3. Consistency doesn't mean treating every situation identically regardless of circumstances. It means being dependable, communicating clearly, and applying the agreements you have made fairly.

    4. Your wife needs to know that your leadership isn't simply a passing mood. It is a commitment you take seriously.

  1. Be fair.

    1. A man who wants to be respected must be willing to examine himself, too.

    2. Listen to your wife's explanation. Consider the circumstances. Be willing to admit when you have misunderstood something or made the wrong decision. Never let your authority become an excuse to protect your pride or avoid accountability for your own behavior.

    3. Fairness means that expectations are understood, consequences are proportionate to the situation, and both partners' dignity matters.

    4. Your wife should never have to wonder whether a decision is about helping her honor your shared agreements or simply about expressing your frustration.

    5. A fair man can be firm without being cruel, and he can lead without believing he is always right.

  2. Be decisive.

    1. I will admit that there is something very attractive about a man who can make a decision with confidence.

    2. A decisive man doesn’t leave every responsibility for his wife to carry. He considers the situation, listens to the people affected, makes a thoughtful decision, and accepts responsibility for the outcome.

    3. That doesn't mean he never ask for advice or considers his wife’s opinion. Quite the opposite. A confident leader can listen without feeling threatened and can change his mind when presented with good reasons.

    4. Decisiveness is not stubbornness. It is the ability to move forward rather than continually avoiding difficult choices.

    5. For a wife who genuinely desires a more traditional, male-led relationship, that confidence can be deeply reassuring.

Leadership Is a Responsibility, Not Just a Privilege

If you want your wife to respect your leadership, remember that respect is strengthened by what you consistently demonstrate, not merely by the title of HOH (Head of House)

Be the man who keeps his word. Be the man who can remain calm when a conversation becomes difficult. Be the man who listens carefully, makes thoughtful decisions, and follows through on the commitments you have made together.

And remember that your wife is trusting you with something vulnerable when she invites you into this part of her life.

Treat that trust as something precious.

The goal isn't to make your wife afraid to disagree with you. It is to build a marriage in which she can express herself honestly, knowing that your leadership will be firm when necessary, fair in its application, consistent in its expectations and grounded in live and respect.

That, to me, is the kind of masculine leadership worth respecting.

  1. one of our world’s great problems is egocentric, Self-serving leadership leaders who think people exist for their benefit, Instead of vice versa.

Come to serve, Not to be served.

  2. I earned a spanking last week which demonstrates my husband's steadfastness and fairness quite well! The first thing to know is that I'm not spanked frequently, and that is not just because I'm some kind of pure being, but because our rules are a bit looser than I think many other taken in hand relationships. There is a lot of wiggle room and more "big picture" leeway in my rules. That's just the type of marriage we have.

However - every three weeks my husband goes to church with one of our kids about an hour early to volunteer for set up. Every single one of those weeks, I have been late to church - often by a significant amount of time. He asked me to be on time and it didn't work. He asked me to write out my morning schedule and stick to it, and it didn't work. Finally last month he said I will be spanked next time it happens. Just last weekend I was even later than I had ever been. There weren't any circumstances besides my own poor planning that led to this.

I don't relish being punished. But I knew it was something I deserved. After church our friends Sage and Seth came over, and they played outside with the children while my husband had me over his knee. It included a lecture about timeliness, about how our church attendance honors God, about how him sitting in our family pew with only one kid while the rest of us sneak into a back pew mid-sermon is embarrassing for him. He was right to discipline me for this.

But this is what being firm and consistent and fair is. I don't think a spanking for a first offense at lateness would be fair, but he knew that he needed to start making warnings. He tried to help me stick to a schedule, and every time I was late it was something he let me know was a concern. And when those conversations did not lead to improvement, that is when he did exactly what he told me he would do - spank. He was firm and consistent in his belief that I needed to improve my punctuality at church. He was never mean or cruel about it. It was all done out of love.

While my backside was sore, and I fell into prayer for the next few days to seek forgiveness from the Lord, I knew that my husband had made the right decision to spank me for this behavior. In a couple more weeks, I will have the opportunity to show up to church on time.

    1. Oh Darcy,
Thank you for sharing. Having ADHD I have alarms for everything. Its ironic that you posted that because, I messed up last week.
I can tell you that most of my spankings are just maintenance but last week I got a spanking for not going to bed when I should have despite being told to set an alarm. So I really do understand. I pray for you weekly, and I mean that. You are on my prayer list for Wednesdays.
